We've seen lots of third party controllers pop up for retro systems over the years, including the excellent Hyperkin Admiral for the N64, but we could always use another one, couldn't we?

Retro Fighters currently has a Kickstarter on the go which aims to bring a Next Generation Wireless Brawler64 controller into the hands of eager retro gamers. We took a look at their wired Brawler64 controller last year and found it to be rather good.

At the time of writing with 28 days left to go, it's smashed its humble £15,689 goal with 877 backers pledging £45,967. For as little as $29 you could get one of these lovely controllers when they've been manufactured, with options to pledge more and get up to four in one bundle:

Here's a bit more about this Brawler64 from Retro Fighters:

What is the Retro Fighters N64 Wireless Controller - Brawler64?

We are happy to announce our NEW wireless edition of the Brawler64 N64 Controller! We have spent over 12 months in software development & testing on the wireless edition and are excited to release the Next Generation Wireless Brawler64 controller!

3 years ago we launched and successfully fulfilled our Next Generation N64 wired controller through Kickstarter. We have been more than humbled and grateful for all the support we have received through the retro gaming community!

The Brawler64 Wireless Edition comes with updated features and designs. Now featuring 2.4Ghz wireless technology and a built-in rechargeable battery. The NEW Brawler64 Wireless Edition has a wireless range of 30+ feet and battery life of 10+ hours.

Maybe it's the way the controller is shaped similarly to modern controllers, but this just looks so naked without a second analog stick

I get why it doesn't have one, but it just looks wrong

I kinda like the N64 fork controller (or is that N64k?). The stick totally suits the games too, Mario 64 feels a lot worse with a modern stick.

Looking forward to the day when they add N64 to the NSO and hopefully release an official wireless replica. I thought that controller was fantastic.

@Thesharkfromjaws Worth the money then? I can't keep wearing out my original N64 controllers.

Backed the wired version of this and loved it, so I've backed this one too . Their dreamcast controller is top notch as well.

That looks better than the original. Oh well, controller designs have gone far from the N64 days.

Like the look except for that small control pad bezel on the shell. Does it feature rumble support? That'd be pretty cool.

I was actually checking this out on their website recently because I was looking into the Striker DC and Brawler Gen (which I plan to get)... if they were to just make on that was Wii (U) related or heck even Switch (ha, I KNOW the company is RETRO), or heck, for anything for the PS1-PS4, I'll be all over it!!

@Burning_Spear I think so, yeah. I had the same issues with my N64 controllers. Three of them are so completely worn out they feel awful and one is still just okay. so I took a shot one of these things to use instead of fiddling with replacement parts. Still need to spend a little more time with it to be sure I love it, but it's solid for sure.

@Thesharkfromjaws Can I have yours?
Fixing them is so easy, I just out of habit fix any I come across.

Unfortunately I'm a bit of an N64 purist and I don't think the analogue stick on that would work very well with N64 games. The shape around the analogue stick is like a GameCube one whereas the N64 had a sort of flatter shaped octagon (it's almost a square shape) which means this stick will not be able to reach the full diagonal range an N64 stick could.

Either that or they will have remapped the ranges of their stick to match the full range of an N64 stick's diagonals but this will result in twitchiness because the ranges will no longer be linear. I believe Nintendo did something similar with Mario 64 in 3D All-stars which is why Mario feels so twitchy to control in that game.

I've never actually come across a replacement N64 analogue stick that I've been satisfied with, they all get the sensitivity wrong and usually have a large dead zone. The only decent option IMHO is to have an original controller and replace the plastic bowl with a steel one to prevent them wearing out.

Any games I’d want to play from the good old 64 are all on the 3DS, remade and in stereo 3D

I'll keep an eye on it, but I'm not enamored with the idea of backing a third party controller, I'll wait for some reviews.

I think this is a great option for people like me who want to modernize their retro collection. I'm going to pick a few of these bad boys up

I’ve got one, it’s a decent controller but the smooth rubber analogue stick grip isn’t brilliant to grip.

Would have preferred a circular edge instead of an 8-cornered edge of the analog controllers.

The original is still the best even if it isn't wireless.

I mean, how are people supposed to play GoldenEye 64 dual analog style with these new designs--tell me that?

This new version might be great is many uses cases, but it's losing something from the original.

Eh, the wire never bothered me. I also like the original design and use the rumble pak.

@Burning_Spear lubricate the stick bowl and you won’t wear them out. Use super lube.

Personally I always loved the original trident N64 controller design. It's very unique and fun to use.

Oké i like it, but... Where is the second analog stick?

I'm definitely interested, especially in the wireless version.

I wish one of these modern takes on the N64 controller would opt to build rumble directly into the controller. Considering I have other controllers that can connect to a memory pack, it's more in my interest for this kind of controller to have rumble over focusing on only accepting memory cards.

I really don't like that mushroom cap control stick. Look at the sticks for modern consoles; the top is concave to nestle your thumb into the center, allowing for a more comfortable grip. I feel like my thumb will constantly slide off this thing.

@KayFiOS I can’t speak to this controller, but it isn’t an issue with GameCube joycons and dual shocks.

The true ultimate N64 controller is the original with a bionic arm.

I use this controller for my n64. It's almost a necessity for FPS games like Duke Nukem 64, Doom 64 and turok.

@JohnnyC That would be incredible. I just bought the SNES and Super Famicom pads for Switch and I now can't go back to playing those old games with modern controllers. I can see this happening next generation but not on the same console as 3D All Stars.

@Chlocean I also picked up the SNES controller. Love it. Agreed, not gonna happen while they can get £50 for a bundle with Mario 64.

When you think about it, this design is very similar to the Wii U Pro Controller, judging by the placement of the C Buttons and their uses in most games.

@Burning_Spear I have the wired one too and it's awesome, no complaints from me. The analogue stick felt just right to me
